New poll finds strong majority opposes gender-affirming care bans for trans minors

A new poll from Gallup about Americans’ attitudes around transgender rights reveals a growing distaste for far-right efforts to ban gender-affirming care.

According to the poll, six in 10 U.S. adults oppose laws banning gender-affirming care for minors.

The state is also currently suing for the right to discriminate against trans kids in schools.

At the same time, a slim majority – 51% – of Americans think transitioning is morally wrong. Just forty-four percent call it “morally acceptable.”

The morality of transitioning – which the survey called “changing one’s gender” – falls along partisan and generational lines.

Those who consider it morally acceptable include political liberals (81%), Democrats (72%), those who don’t identify with a religion (67%), those who don’t attend religious services regularly (59%), young adults aged 18 to 29 (56%) and college graduates (53%).

Overall, more women than men consider gender transition morally acceptable, 48% to 39%.

Asked about bans on gender-affirming “treatments and medical procedures” generally, and specifically regarding “psychological support, hormonal treatments and medical surgeries” for minors, Republicans were more supportive of banning gender-affirming care than Democrats and independents.

Gallup researchers found that on both questions, Republicans are more supportive than Democrats and independents of bans on gender-affirming care for minors.

Fifty-three percent of Republicans favor bans on gender-affirming care for minors, while the number dropped to 43% for banning gender-affirming care in general.

Only 25% of Democrats and 34% of independents favor a ban on gender-affirming care for minors.

A Gallup poll in March revealed an average of 0.9% of U.S. adults in 2023 identified as transgender. That number grew to 2.8% among Generation Z.

Seven and a half percent of U.S. adults overall identify as LGBTQ+. That number is up from 3.5% in 2012, the first year Gallup asked about sexual orientation and transgender status.
